Unit 5 Inés





5 BUSINESS OR PLEASURE?

 

 

The student will be able to:

·         Identify basic information for situations such as plane trips, timetables, advertisements, reservations, etc.

·         Plan a possible trip

·         Express and answer to applications and simple questions in traveling situations.

On a round trip

 

o   Identify, recognize and meet the necessary requirements to travel abroad according to the destination and guidelines of the trip.

o   (e.g. documentation, articles of the trip, luggage, etc.).

o   Fill out forms on line to make reservations of staying and transportation.

o   Fill out forms, answer questions and listen to routine information in the arrival station, airport, etc.

o    Recognize basic information in the Schedule boards and listen to the information in the speakers in different stations, airports, etc (e.g. arrival time and departure times, flight number, etc.)

o   Find specific places in the map of the station, airport, etc. (e.g. customs, luggage claim, restrooms, etc.)

 

 

a)  Getting your documents ready (passport, visa, medical care, & other)

Instructions:

go to each one of the links bellow and watch the videos if there is one or :

1. - download the forms to obtain a passport, visa, medical care and car insurance then,

2. - fill them out the best you can.

 

Listening activity

Listen to the video and write down on your piece of paper the instructions that are given to fill out the application.


 

Reading and Writing activity

The following link is to obtain a Mexican passport, download the application and fill it out with the best of your knowledge so you get the experience of doing so, any questions that you might have, ask them to your classmates or instructor for clarification.

Watch the video before doing the writing activity, take notes in a chart to show what you can do and cannot do.


 

Writing activity

Imagine you are an American citizen and you are applying for a passport fill this form out the best you can, there might be some areas that don´t apply to you, don´t worry about it just fill out the ones that do.

The link bellow is to obtain medical insurance, fill it out the best you, if you don´t know what they are asking you in some spaces, leave them blank for class discussion.

Listen to the video and write down in a piece of paper what are the advantages for a family of this visa and what are the disadvantages for a single person.

Listening Activity

Listen to the tips given to you about hotel booking, what do you think applies to your hotel choice, write about it.


 

Writing Activity

Look at the website on the left hand side; check out the blanks to fill out when you are trying to book a hotel room.

Copy it in your notebook and fill out the information required.


 

c)  Packing your luggage

Listening Activity

Watch the video and write down the tips, put a check mark next to each tip that applies to you.


 

Reading and Writing Activity

Look at the luggage restrictions and make a list of your own luggage that don´t include the restrictions

Listening Activity

Activate the cc for the video which is on the right bottom corner, so you can read the announcements. Answer the following questions

What is the name of the plane?

What speed is it traveling on?

What is the altitude of the plane?


 

Writing Activity

Look at the images for airport signs, which ones are the same as in your country and which ones are different? Make a list about them.


 

Writing Activity

Look at the airport images, make a list of the most likely airports that you would travel to. Identify the following areas in an airport of your choice: arrivals, departures, luggage claim, boarding area, waiting room, facilities, ticket counter, elevator, escalator, cart, information desk, luggage check-in area, and landing strip.

Look at the subway map of New York. Identify where are the connections with other trains, look at the name of the stations, get familiarized with north, south, east, and west. Make a route to get from JFK international airport to Van Cortlandt Park.

How many stations do you go through?

How many trains do you have to take?


 

Look at the airport timetables

Choose one of the charts, find a city, the time of the flight, the departure gate, the flight number, if it is cancelled or not, if it is on time or not, find the arrival gate and time and any other information that you can find.

Reading Activity

Read the following information in the website and write about your personal experience.

Does the article help?

Did you already know the information?

What can you do if you lose your luggage?

Have you ever lost your luggage?

Did you get traveler´s insurance?


 

 

 

Dealing with accommodation

 

o   Ask for help to claim the loss of luggage and follow information

o   Ask for basic information about places and transportation in the city.

o   Read, find places and understand maps of the city of your destination

o   Act out the registration of checking in and out of a hotel.

o   Act out petitions and or simple complaints of lodging.

o   Act out a dialogue about a specific situation of a trip of pleasure and/or business.

 

 

6 TIME TO EAT

 

El participante es capaz de:

·         Describir alimentos y expresar sus hábitos alimenticios.

·         Hacer, aceptar y rechazar invitaciones a comer.

·         Ordenar alimentos en un restaurante 

·         expresar brevemente y de forma simple su opinión sobre los alimentos y establecimientos de alimentos

 

1)    Food and diet

 

Likes and dislikes about food

 

Clasificar los alimentos en categorías (e.g. carnes, vegetales, cereales, etc.)

Relacionar los alimentos con sus características básicas (e.g. lemon-bitter, banana-soft, etc.).

Utilizar las características de los alimentos para expresar de forma básica qué le gusta y que no.

Listen to the video carefully and then write down if you have done any of this suggestions to start liking fruits and vegetables.


 

Reading Activity

Read the article and make a list of foods that you won´t eat because of the taste and another one of the foods that you won´t eat because of the texture.


 

 

Writing Activity

Look at the website go to the different recipes and describe your favorite taste and texture for your food.  


 

 

 

b)    Healthy and unhealthy food

Listening Activity

Activate the cc so you can read the conversation as well.

Listen to the conversation and write your opinion on not eating animal products.


 

 

Reading Activity

Go to the link below and click on each food, it will show you a recipe for it. In your notebook copy the list and put a check mark next to the ones that you already eat and explain which ones you are willing to start eating and which ones you will not eat either because of an allergy or taste.


 

 

Writing Activity

Look at the vegeterian recepies. Are you a vegetarian? Do you think eating vegetarian food is healthier? What do you consider unhealthy?

Read all the classifications of the common sentences for eating. Translate the words that you don´t know using your dictionary.

An eating-out experience

 

o   Localizar información específica relacionada con establecimientos de alimentos y los servicios que ofrecen, como tipo de establecimiento (comida rápida, cafetería, bar, etc.), buffet, servicio de fiestas, comida para llevar, dietas especiales, etc.

o   Identificar las secciones de un menú (entradas, sopas, ensaladas, plato fuerte, postre, bebidas, etc.)

o   Ordenar alimentos del menú en un restaurante.

o   Expresar su opinión sobre los alimentos consumidos en un restaurante (e.g. The soup is cold).

o   Describir y explicar su experiencia positiva o negativa en un restaurante o establecimiento de alimentos.

Read about slow food in the website, write your opinion about it. Include if you had already heard about it or not.

Reading Activity

Read the page for a typical American restaurant; find similarities and differences with our typical food. Write a one page document where you describe the differences and similarities.


 

 

Writing Activity

Look at the different menus, and then create your own menu for a whole day, breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper; including appetizers, dessert and drinks.
